In an increasing interconnected world where issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, rising inequality pose multiple risks, the SDG framework can become a powerful strategic tool for identifying the connections between compounding risks and opportunities.
More than ever, academics, governments and civil society organisations are recognising the need to involve the public in measuring what matters in our daily lives. Behind this move towards public participation is the firm belief that if we can measure our wellbeing more accurately as a society, then we will be better placed to bring about change in policy and practice which will have a positive impact on our lives. Scotland faces a number of challenges at present, quite apart from deciding its constitutional future. These include dealing with the impacts of climate change (such as increased flooding), an on-going recession, and entrenched social problems.
